Bringing Mental health Care Closer to Home in the Mat-Su Valley

World Mental Health Day highlights the importance of expanding access to care for adults and adolescents
For someone experiencing a mental health crisis, getting help close to home can mean staying connected to family during a difficult time. World Mental Health Day, observed on October 10, highlights mental health needs worldwide and encourages action to improve access to care. In Alaska’s Mat-Su Valley, Mat-Su Regional Medical Center is helping advance that goal through a new behavioral health hospital that will expand treatment options for adults and adolescents.
Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, in partnership with the Mat-Su Health Foundation, broke ground in July 2026 on the freestanding facility adjacent to its campus in Palmer. The estimated $70 million project will provide 45 inpatient psychiatric beds—27 for adults and 18 for adolescents—and is expected to open in late 2028. The hospital will relocate its 16 existing inpatient behavioral health beds to the new facility, adding 29 beds and nearly tripling its inpatient psychiatric capacity.
The expansion responds to a need the hospital’s caregivers see firsthand. In 2024, Mat-Su Regional received 1,253 behavioral health referrals but could admit only 437 patients because of limited bed availability. When local beds are full, patients may need to travel to Anchorage or out of state for treatment, adding strain for them and their families. The new hospital is designed to help reduce those transfers and provide timely inpatient care within the community, including dedicated capacity for adolescents.
“This facility represents our shared commitment to ensuring our neighbors can heal and stay connected to their families right here in the Mat-Su Valley,” said Taylor Rudd, chief executive officer of Mat-Su Regional Medical Center.
As World Mental Health Day encourages awareness and action, Mat-Su Regional’s investment represents a concrete step toward making care more accessible for the people who call the Valley home. Follow the hospital project’s progress at Look Forward Mat-Su.
