Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Where can I get an application?
A. You can print an application from this website by clicking on "Download a Volunteer Application." You can also pick up an application at any volunteer work station at either the Medical Center or Outpatient Center. You can also call the Volunteer Services Coordinator at 861-6781 and leave the correct spelling of your name, your mailing address, and a number where you can be reached. An application will be mailed to you within five working days.
Q. We go Outside every winter. Can I still volunteer?
A. Certainly! One of the great concepts of volunteer service is the flexibility it allows you. Just contact the Volunteer Services Manager of the dates of your absence. Although your same location and schedule cannot be guaranteed upon your return, every effort will be made to provide you with a satisfactory placement.
Q. Do I have to volunteer a certain number of hours a week? / a month? / a year?
A. Volunteers are encouraged to provide Mat-Su Regional with 100-hours of volunteer service annually. There are, however, no penalties if you cannot fulfill that commitment.
Q. I heard you have to have all your vaccinations and be fingerprinted with a background check before you can volunteer. Is that true?
A. Volunteers are required to undergo a drug screening and be fingerprinted with a background check (if you are over 18 years of age) prior to volunteer service.
Q. Is there an age limit?
A. There is no upper age limit but volunteers must be at least 15-years-old.
Q. Can I come in and just rock babies?
A. Our Family Birthing Center encourages families to stay together both during and after the birthing process. Each room has a convertible couch for Dad or family member, a crib for the newborn and a rocking chair so the newborn can have that little extra helping of TLC. Occasionally, through medical necessity, a newborn will be in the nursery and a volunteer may be called on to "hold the baby." However, these instances are too rare to constitute a separate position from the Family Birthing Center Post-Partum Volunteer.
Q. What happens with the proceeds from the gift shop and espresso?
A. Proceeds from the gift shop and espresso are primarily used to purchase magazine subscriptions for our patients and visitors in our waiting rooms.
Q. Do I have to have previous experience to be a volunteer?
A. No experience is required. Our on-the-job training with an existing volunteer will provide you with all the training you'll need in whatever field of service you have chosen.
